Weathernews conducted a questionnaire survey on “umbrellas” for users of the smartphone app “Weathernews”.
The rate of holding an umbrella from light rain is 73% in Tokyo. On the other hand, Okinawa, which does not care regarding getting wet, and Hokkaido, which is a motorized society, have 48%, showing a cultural difference with respect to rain.
The majority is “from light rain”
As a result, “from light rain” accounted for the majority at 55%.
Other than that, 32% answered “if it fell firmly” and 10% answered “if it fell suddenly”.
Different rain cultures in Tokyo, Okinawa and Hokkaido
On the other hand, in Okinawa, 48%, and in the case of light rain, the majority (52%) did not use an umbrella. A person from Naha City, Okinawa Prefecture, answered, “I will not do as much as I can unless I get soaked.”
Surprisingly, Hokkaido was 48%, the same as Okinawa. If the main means of transportation is a car, it is only necessary to keep the rain from the building to the car for a short time, so it seems that there are many cases where a little rain does not put an umbrella.
・ “I stopped using umbrellas when transportation became the center of cars.” (Kushiro City, Hokkaido)
・ “Since I travel a lot by car, I often use a hooded haori to surpass it, but if I get off the hood and the parking place is far away, I will put an umbrella.” (Asahikawa City, Hokkaido)
