“Initial results point to a stomach flu but further examinations will provide more information.” Two schools in Zandvliet and Geraardsbergen, with a total of 72 pupils and 24 supervisors, have been on a sports trip since May 30 in the Sport Vlaanderen facilities in Blankenberge.
A child fell ill on Monday. Thursday, 16 students and an adult from a school were sick in turn. In the other school, 10 students and seven adults also fell ill.
“No one has yet had to be taken to hospital and all the children are being followed by their GP. Zandvliet school has ended the stay and the children have been picked up by their parents. For the other establishment, the sports classes end this Friday, specifies Sport Vlaanderen.
The Afsca will go there on Friday to carry out a check and take samples, which will be analyzed in the laboratory. “We will carry out an inspection to check, among other things, that everything relating to food has been correctly stored. (…) Samples will also be taken from the remains of meals in particular”, which will be able to give more indications in the coming days on the cause of the incident. “For the moment, it is too early to say that there is a link with food”, estimates Hélène Bonte, of Afsca.
