The US sanctions the police chief of Ameca, Jalisco, for links with CJNG

The Treasury Department from United States imposed this Thursday Economic sanctions to six persons of Mexican nationality for their association with the Jalisco Cartel New generation (CJNG), including the Security Commissioner of Ameca, Severo Flores Mendoza.

The decision is the result of the collaboration of the Department of the Treasury with the Mexican Government, the Office of Customs and Border Protection (CBP) and the US Food and Drug Administration (FDA).

The Treasury Department blames the Jalisco New Generation Cartel for producing a large part of the fentanyl (synthetic opioid) that is trafficked in the United States, a substance responsible for a large number of overdose deaths in the country.

In 2021, the country recorded more than 100,000 overdose deaths for the first time, mainly due to increased fentanyl use, according to data from the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC).
