Spending the Pentecost weekend on Sylt is a privilege for those with a good budget. They are usually among their own kind on the luxury island. This year, however, everything is different. Thanks to the 9-euro ticket, with which the German government wants to make travel possible for everyone despite high fuel prices, Sylt will be populated by a new clientele this year. From punks and the marginalized, for whom the trip to the north suddenly becomes affordable thanks to the cheaper tickets.
Until August 31, people in Germany should be able to use public transport for 9 euros per month. This was decided as part of the federal government’s relief package. Regional trains throughout Germany can be used with the 9-euro ticket.
Not prepared for the big coming
On the island of Sylt, these prospects do not make everyone happy. “We expect an increased number of passengers during the campaign period. Both in the trains on the route from Hamburg to Sylt and in the buses on the island, »says the managing director of Sylt Marketing, Moritz Luft, of the German Press Agency. The reason for the doubts: The island is not optimally equipped for the 9-euro ticket and the expected rush. In the summer months, the trains are already at the limit of their capacity at times.
The concerns are justified. Left have with the battle cry “Sylt boardern!” called to travel to the island, like that «Bild» reported. Not for the first time. Already in the spring of 1995, rioters followed the call from the Autonomer and traveled to Sylt with a weekend train ticket for 15 marks. They wanted to cause chaos there.
Several rioters arrested
Several dozen rioters were arrested at the Westerland train station. The first punks arrive at the same place. This ensures a noisy weekend on the otherwise quiet and posh island. (pbe)
