North Korea’s nuclear chief representatives from South Korea, the United States, and Japan are meeting in Seoul to explore ways to respond to North Korea.

Kim Gun, head of the Korean Peninsula Peace Relations Headquarters at the Ministry of Foreign Affairs, will hold a meeting with U.S. Special Representative for North Korea Sung Kim and the Japanese Ministry of Foreign Affairs’ Asian and Oceanian Affairs Bureau Director Funakoshi Takehiro to discuss North Korea’s successive provocations.

The meeting, held at the Ministry of Foreign Affairs, will be followed by a trilateral consultation between Korea and the United States following bilateral consultations between Korea and the United States.

Representative Sung Kim, who visited Korea on the eve of the meeting, said that he expects meaningful discussions between South Korea and the US as if conscious of North Korea’s recent provocation of an intercontinental ballistic missile and ICBM.

“Since my last visit to Seoul, some important developments have occurred on the Korean Peninsula. I look forward to in-depth discussions through bilateral consultations with Minister of Foreign Affairs Kim Gun-geon, Director General of Korean Peninsula Peace Relations, as well as trilateral consultations with Japan’s Director-General Funakoshi.”

This is the first face-to-face meeting between the chief representatives of North Korea, the United States and Japan, since the inauguration of the Yun Seok-yeol administration.

It has been regarding four months since the Korea-U.S.-Japan foreign ministers meeting in Hawaii last February and face-to-face consultations.

As North Korea is known to have completed preparations for its seventh nuclear test, interest is growing as to what kind of solution the South Korea, US and Japan will come up with with this meeting as an opportunity.

Diplomats predict that Minister of Foreign Affairs Park Jin will visit Washington in the US and Tokyo in Japan one following another in the middle of this month to hold a meeting with foreign ministers.
