Vaud: 452 million paid so far for “hardship cases”

The Federal Office of Public Health (OFSP) and the Federal Commission for Vaccinations (CFV) recommend a second booster shot of the anti-Covid vaccine for severely immunosuppressed people. No reminder is needed at this time for the general public.

Severely immunosuppressed patients continue to be at significant risk of developing a severe form of the disease if they contract Covid-19. They fail to build up good immune protection despite several vaccinations, the FOPH said in a statement on Monday.

A second booster vaccination with a messenger RNA vaccine is therefore recommended for this group of people. But on condition that their attending physician considers it promising, specifies the FOPH.

Not the general public

The FOPH recalls that it is not necessary for the general public to receive an additional booster vaccination in the current situation. According to available data, people who are fully vaccinated or vaccinated and cured are still well protected once morest severe forms of Covid-19.

“By the summer holidays, the population will be informed of the vaccination recommendations for the fall and winter of 2022/23”, continues the FOPH. For the fall, several scenarios are possible.

The FOPH is not advancing at this stage. An additional booster vaccination may be recommended for vulnerable people, ie people over 65 and those suffering from certain chronic diseases, but it is also possible that it is planned for the whole population.

Trips abroad

For people who need a booster vaccination for a trip, the Confederation is evaluating the possibilities so that they can have access to it in time. As in the past, certificates are issued following vaccination (basic immunization, boosters), when a PCR test certifies a cure for Covid-19 or upon presentation of a negative test result.

The Confederation continues to monitor the situation. The mandatory infection reporting system (number of cases, tests, positivity rate) remains in place and is supplemented with data from the Sentinella reporting system.

Wastewater monitoring has been greatly strengthened, further indicates the FOPH. It actively tracks the spread of the virus among more than 70% of the population and quickly detects new large outbreaks. Genomic surveillance emphasizes the identification of variants that may cause severe disease progression and numerous hospitalizations.

At the same time, the Confederation observes immunity among the population. She thus obtains indications on the number of people who have already contracted the virus or who are fully vaccinated and have developed antibodies.
