New York, United States of America (CNN) – The US court’s decision in favor of actor Johnny Depp once morest his ex-wife has raised Come onBur Heard, and the latter’s order to pay the actor millions of dollars in compensation, met with wide international interaction.
The ruling is a “massive” legal victory for Depp and a rejection of Heard, according to CNN legal analyst Joey Jackson.
“What[Johnny Depp]had to overcome was a matter of the First Amendment, which is that we all have a right to express our thoughts and opinions,” Jackson explained. “What they[the jury]said is that, yes, you have a right to the amendment.” The first is unless you say something untrue that discredits and harms someone in their professional sector.”
Amber Heard’s spokesman, David Sheen, said the latter plans to appeal the ruling.
The jury awarded Depp $10 million in damages and $5 million in punitive damages. The agency awarded Amber Heard $2 million in damages and non-punitive damages.
As the sentence was pronounced, Heard closed her eyes. Depp was not present in court.
The defamation trial has been underway since April, and jurors have heard more than 100 hours of testimony in all. They have heard from dozens of witnesses including live testimony from Johnny Depp and Amber Heard.
