Andy Robertson, captain of the Scotland national team, expressed his regret over his team’s performance once morest Ukraine in the European qualifiers for the 2022 World Cup in Glasgow yesterday, and the team’s hopes of reaching the world finals for the first time in 24 years have evaporated.
Thanks to goals from Andy Yarmolenko, Roman Yarimchuk and Artem Duvbek, Ukraine beat Scotland 3-1 in its first official match since the Russian war on its soil.
After this victory, Ukraine will meet Wales next Sunday, and the winner of them will qualify for the finals that will start in Qatar in November.
“We are very disappointed following we waited so long for this match,” Robertson told reporters following the defeat.
“With this, we will miss the World Cup finals once more and we have to wait four years, and all we can now do is apologize to our fans,” Robertson added.
At first, Ukraine advanced with two goals, Dorn responded and then Calum McGregor reduced the difference in the 79th minute, but the Ukrainian team clearly outperformed and dominated the game, and substitute Duvbek added the third goal from a counterattack in stoppage time.
The Ukrainian national team dedicated the victory to the Ukrainian people in his country.
“We had to keep trying and stay in the game, but we didn’t succeed in that,” Liverpool defender Robertson added.
