After her round of 16 exit at the French Open, the Chinese tennis player Qinwen Zheng addressed an important topic that has so far hardly been noticed in the sports world. The 19-year-old said following her three-set defeat once morest the Polish world number one Iga Swiatek that she was unable to show her best performance because of menstrual problems.

“The first day is always so hard. And then I have to do sports, although I always have such pain on the first day,” said Zheng. “I had such a stomach ache that I mightn’t even scream ‘come on’,” Zheng continued. “I wish I was a man on the pitch and didn’t have to go through this.”

She would be better without pain

When the score was 0: 3 in the second set, the Chinese, the current world number 74, had to be treated, including a back massage. “If I didn’t have my stomach ache, I might have more fun, run better, hit harder, show more commitment on the pitch. It’s a shame I mightn’t give what I wanted to give today,” Zheng said.
