“The condition of the five-year-old boy is stable following the operation.” That is probably the most important sentence on the day following the dramatic action in Sackstrasse in Graz. The survival of the five-year-old, who was attacked by his own mother (42) with a knife with a 13-centimeter blade and seriously injuredas reported, is due to the courageous intervention of the neighbor and the police who rushed to the scene.
What investigators know so far
The 21-year-old neighbor found the boy injured in his mother’s bathroom and sounded the alarm following the 42-year-old Slovakian came to her to make a call.
Two officers from the Schmiedgasse police station applied a bandage to the boy, who was badly injured on his forearms.
Only a short time later, the SRK Rapid Reaction Forces team arrived at the scene and, together with the police officers present, arrested the mother, who was also seriously injured.
In the meantime, the 42-year-old has been requested to be remanded in custody, the Graz public prosecutor’s office has confirmed. The woman might not be questioned on Wednesday due to her state of health, this is now planned for Thursday.
Father was in Upper Austria and has already been questioned
The woman’s partner – according to his own statements, he is also the father of the injured boy – was in Upper Austria at the time of the crime and was contacted by police officers from the Perg police station.
The 26-year-old Afghan immediately drove to Graz and was still being questioned on Tuesday evening. “But the interrogation did not bring any further insight into the circumstances of the crime or the motive for the crime,” said police spokesman Heimo Kohlbacher. Except that apparently the father also suspected a health impairment in the mother.
Mother and son are still in Graz Regional Hospital. Both have had surgery. The mother’s injuries are apparently far less serious than those of her child. The five-year-old had blood vessels, tendons and nerves sewn back together. He was in the operating room until the evening hours.
The seriously injured boy can probably only be questioned in a few days. His recovery comes first.
suspicion of attempted murder
The State Criminal Police Office (group body and life) has taken over the investigation. Investigated on suspicion of attempted murder. The probable murder weapon, a standard kitchen knife, was secured. The 42-year-old apparently self-inflicted her injuries. Incidentally, the family was not previously known to the youth welfare office in Graz, but it is now involved in the case.
