Mauritania is a pivotal country in the region

On Tuesday, NATO announced its intention to take measures within months to strengthen and intensify cooperation with Mauritania, adding that Nouakchott is a major partner of the alliance and a pivotal country in the region.

NATO Assistant Secretary-General for Political and Security Affairs, Javier Colomina, said following his talks in Nouakchott with Mauritanian President Mohamed Ould Cheikh El-Ghazwani: “I discussed with the Mauritanian President the areas of coordination, cooperation and the security situation in the Sahel region. Mauritania is a pivotal country in the region and a major partner of NATO. We will take measures within months to intensify cooperation with Mauritania.”

On Tuesday, Javier Colomina began a visit to Mauritania, the duration of which was not specified, where he is scheduled to hold meetings with the ministers of Foreign Affairs, Mohamed Salem Ould Merzouk, Defense Hanna Ould Sidi, and Interior Minister Mohamed Ahmed Ould Mohamed El Amine.
