Senate approves Escazú Agreement

The Congress dispatched the initiative that seeks for our country to adhere to the agreement for the environment that it promoted in Latin America and that has already entered into force.

This Tuesday, the Senate approved the Escazú Agreement, project that adds Chile to the regional treaty in favor of the environment, following it was rejected by the administration of former President Sebastián Piñera. With the backing of the upper house, the project was ready to be enacted and Chile will be part of the agreement that he promoted under the government of Michelle Bachelet.

The initiative was signed by the President, Gabriel Boric, in March 2022, where he called to “amend the course” due to the position adopted by the former president.

The Escazú Agreement had already been endorsed by the Chamber of Deputies and Deputies and now had the support of 31 senators and senators, while three were once morest and eleven others abstained.

According to what was published by Unicefthe Regional Agreement on Access to Information, Public Participation and Access to Justice in Environmental Matters in Latin America and the Caribbean -better known as the Escazú Agreement- is a tool for protection of the environment and human rights, it seeks to guarantee access to information, public participation and access to justice in environmental matters.

Along the same lines, they point out that establishes objectives so that people can have access to environmental information, that people can be consulted in the environmental decision-making process, that they can go to court in cases of damage to the environment, and that promotes the defense of the rights of environmental defenders and respect for the rights of indigenous peoples and local communities.

The initiative is the first regional environmental agreement in Latin America and the Caribbean and was adopted in March 2018.
