President Luis Abinader expressed that he would feel “happier” to attend the Summit of the Americas if Cuba were also present.
“The United States is the host country of this summit and in that sense they have the power to invite whomever they consider. I believe that Cuba has attended this summit on other occasions and what we have to do is determine what are the issues that we are going to discuss.“said the president.
At the beginning of May, the United States ruled out inviting the governments of Cuba, Nicaragua and Venezuela to the Summit of the Americas to be held in June in Los Angeles, because he believes that “They do not respect democracy”.
“Cuba, Nicaragua and the regime of (Nicolás) Maduro do not respect the democratic charter of the Americas and therefore I do not expect their presence,” reported the US Undersecretary for Latin America and the Caribbean, Brian Nichols, according to the international agency EFE.
The Dominican head of state added that they will respect the decision of the United States. However, he pointed out “that if there is an opening at a time of world crisis because some countries want to attend to speakr of those that unites us and leave aside those that disunites us, we would also agree and be happier to attend”.
He also indicated that the Ibero-American Summit in 2023, where in addition to the Latin American countries, Spain, Portugal and Andorra are included.
“There we are going to invite all the countries because we must determine what a summit is for, if it is for democracy, if it is to strengthen electoral issues or if it is a summit to talk regarding what unites us or what disunites us,” he specified. the head of state when speaking on the subject.
