“An MSF employee died on Saturday May 28 following being hit three times by gunfire from an individual employed by the Central African Armed Forces (FACA) in the Ouham prefecture, in the north-west of the country”, announced on Tuesday, the NGO Doctors Without Borders (MSF).

Mahamat Ahamat, 46, of Central African nationality “was hit three times” in Moyenne-Sido, 500 km northwest of the capital Bangui, near the Chadian border, the NGO said in a statement.

According to this international humanitarian non-governmental organization providing medical aid, the victim was a “distributor of medicines” on behalf of MSF.

“This death is once once more an opportunity to recall the need to protect civilians, humanitarian workers, medical personnel, patients and health structures, who cannot be targeted by the parties to the conflict”, underlined the NGO.

According to MSF, the death of Mahamat Ahamat “dramatically recalls the reality of the brutal conflict that affects the populations of the Central African Republic every day” since 2013 following the fall of Francois Bozizé.
The circumstances of Mr. Ahamat’s assassination have neither been reported by MSF nor the Central African government.

“MSF is also in contact with the Ministry of Health, the Ministry of Defense and the other authorities concerned in order to better understand the circumstances that have led to this unacceptable situation”, continued the NGO in its press release, stressing that the “exact circumstances still need to be clarified”.

According to a report by the UN Office for the Coordination of Humanitarian Affairs (OCHA) published last January, 396 incidents affecting humanitarian workers were recorded in CAR in 2021.
