LKansas City police fired multiple shots at a black woman believed to be pregnant while searching for a stolen vehicle on Friday.

Authorities said officers in two cars were responding to a call of an armed carjacking shortly before 8 p.m. Friday.

Officers then apparently spotted the vehicle with two suspects inside in the parking lot of a Family Dollar store, and approached it.

At that point, authorities say, the driver fled northeast as two officers chased him, and Leonna Hale, 26, got out of the car and allegedly told officers there was a gun in the car.

Two officers then shot Hale, who was seriously injured and transported to a local hospital, where she is in stable condition.

In video taken by a nearby witness, she is seen lying on the ground in a pool of blood as other officers arrive on the scene – and one of them puts her in handcuffs.

The woman who took the video, who identified herself only as Shedanja to the Kansas City Star, said Hale had her hands up and informed officers at the scene that she was pregnant before they shoot.

The suspected man, who has not yet been named, was also taken to a local hospital for an unrelated medical issue, KCTV reports.

The Missouri State Highway Patrol is now investigating the shooting as protocol dictates that an outside agency investigate shootings involving officers and, according to FOX 4, the two officers involved in the shooting have been placed on administrative leave. .

Shedanja was grabbing gas and ice nearby when the shooting took place, she told the Kansas City Star.
