trademark ‘realityOS’ surfaces just before WWDC

One week away from WWDC 2022, the trademark “realityOS” surfaces. The latter refers to the supposed operating system developed by Apple for its future virtual and augmented reality products.

Disturbing clues suggest thatApple might take advantage of its WWDC 2022, expected on June 6, to tell us regarding its plans for virtual and augmented reality. Two separate trademark filings for a certain “realityOS” have surfaced on Twitter. Filed one like the other on December 8, 2021, these are listed with a deadline for submission set for June 8, 2022… only two days following the opening of the next WWDC, underlines MacRumors.

A detail which is enough to raise awareness, especially since another deposit has also been discovered on the USPTO website (US Patent and Trademark Office), with a deadline this time set for June 9, 2022.

As a reminder, “realityOS” would be the name chosen by Apple for the operating system of its future AR/VR products. And it’s not the first time we’ve heard of it: this name had, for example, was seen last February in code deposited on GitHub, but also in App Store transfer logs.

When Apple plays discretion…

In all likelihood, these trademark deposits would come from Apple. That said, the brand name is absent from the documents unearthed online. We simply discover that they were deposited by “Reality Systems LLC” – but as Parket Ortonani (the originator of the discovery) points out, the address of this company is the same as that previously used by Apple to keep secret the name of certain versions of macOS before they were announced.

It cannot be a coincidence that the “realityOS” trademark owned by a company that seemingly doesn’t exist and is specifically for “wearable computer hardware” is being filed around the world on June 8, 2022 https://t.co/myoRbOvgJa + https://t.co/AH97r95EMn pic.twitter.com/uvsiZCj2rR

WWDC 2022 is traditionally a conference for software announcements, but it is sometimes punctuated by the presentation of new products. It is difficult at this stage to say whether Apple will unveil realityOS during its event, or whether or not the brand will talk regarding its first mixed reality headset, but this track cannot be ruled out. As a reminder, Apple does have an AR/VR headset in the box. Expected on the top of the range, this year or in 2023, the device would have already been presented internally to the board of directors of the Cupertino giant… enough to plead for an upcoming launch.

This helmet would bet anyway on two 4K micro-OLED screens, 15 camera modules, but also on eye tracking capabilities, movement recognition and spatialized sound functionality (spatial audio). Finally, there would be a powerful on-board processor, probably equivalent to an M1 chip (or higher) in terms of performance.
