China’s dynamic zero-COVID approach helps protect people’s lives, Ethiopian expert says (INTERVIEW)

The dynamic zero-COVID approach, adopted by China, works “extremely wonderfully” in protecting people’s lives while minimizing the socio-economic impacts of the pandemic, according to Costantinos Bt. Costantinos, professor of public policy at Addis Ababa University in Ethiopia.

“Look at the epidemiological figures globally and the fact that the numbers of deaths and transmissions in China have become very low is proof of the aggressive zero COVID-19 policy,” the expert told Xinhua during a recent maintenance.

In Costantinos’ view, China has been “very effective” in executing its flexible COVID-19 control strategies.

“China has done an extremely wonderful job with its dynamic zero COVID strategy,” he said, adding that these measures “have yielded good results in terms of human lives and transmissions among the general population.”

“The Chinese psyche, the Chinese understanding, the type of critical thinking that they have instilled in their own people, is a very important basis in the fight once morest the pandemic,” the expert continued.

Costantinos, who is also an economic adviser to the African Union (AU) and the United Nations Economic Commission for Africa (ECA), hailed China’s “great contribution” and “decisive role” to help the world fight the COVID-19 pandemic.

“China had developed all these PPE (personal protective equipment) and other materials even before most developed countries might produce them. They started exporting these equipments to different countries, especially to developing countries in Latin America, Africa and South Asia,” he recalled.

Noting that China has made its COVID-19 vaccines a global public good, Costantinos said vaccines, experts and medical supplies from China are needed by other countries, especially developing countries. , to effectively fight the pandemic.

“China was one of the first countries to be able to distribute these vaccines to developing countries in Africa, Latin America and Asia, so there has been tremendous support,” he said.
