News 24 | Jeddah astronomer: A small asteroid is passing through Earth today, and there is no danger if it collides with it

Today (Monday) evening, a newly discovered small asteroid called (2022 KO3) will be monitored, traveling at a speed of 9.7 km / second, and it will be at the nearest distance of 292,000 km at 08:32 pm Mecca time.

The head of the Astronomical Society in Jeddah, Eng. Majed Abu Zahra, explained that its apparent luminosity will be within (17 +), so it will not be seen with the naked eye and there is no danger of it colliding with our planet.

Abu Zahra pointed out that if the asteroid (2022 KO3) collides with the Earth, it will disintegrate in the upper atmosphere of the Earth and will not cause a “disaster at the level of extinction” and will not have a serious impact on the safety of the inhabitants of the Earth.

He reported that it is much smaller than the asteroid that penetrated the sky of Russia in February 2013, which reached a diameter of 20 meters and disintegrated at a low altitude and released a very high energy that caused a shock wave in the sky that shattered glass of buildings and human injuries due to flying glass and the arrival of small pieces of the remains of that space rock to the Earth’s surface in the form of meteorites.
