Agatha reached category one hurricane status on Sunday morning. During the evening, the hurricane upgraded to Category 2. The powerful system might continue to intensify, reaching the Category 3 hurricane threshold before making landfall. Agatha is moving at a speed of 5 km/h towards the coast of Mexico, which she is expected to hit during the day on Monday.
It should therefore not reach a power worthy of a major hurricane, but might still sow chaos in its path. Officially, hurricane season begins on May 15 in the Eastern Pacific.
Devastating consequences?
The possible impacts of this storm are diverse. First of all, the risks of flooding and landslides are very present. The Salina Cruz area will be particularly affected by downpours, with 350+mm of rain forecast by next Tuesday. The surrounding areas will receive between 50 and 200 mm of rain.
Gusts will also be there from Monday, with sustained winds of up to 155+ km/h, particularly in the south of the country. Power outages are to be expected.
