Giro: Jai Hindley, 1st Australian to win the Giro d’Italia – rts.ch

Jai Hindley won the Giro in front of the Verona bullring. He is the 1st Australian to win the second biggest round of the cycling season.

The 21st and final stage, a 17.4km time trial, went to Matteo Sobrero, Italian champion in the discipline. In the final standings, Hindley precedes the Ecuadorian Richard Carapaz, Olympic champion and winner of the event in 2019. The Spaniard Mikel Landa finishes 3rd place ahead of the Italian veteran Nibali (37), double winner of the Giro who announced his retirement at the end of the season.

nice revenge

Hindley (26) was ranked 2nd in the 2020 edition. He lost the pink jersey on the last day in the Milan time trial. This time, the Australian showed up with a 1’25 sec advantage over Carapaz, enough to parade in the arenas of Verona where the Ecuadorian had triumphed in 2019. In the last lap, Hindley (15th) competed with Carapaz (10th) to whom he dropped only 7 seconds.

Australia has already won the Tour de France in 2011 through Cadel Evans, present in Verona. On the other hand, no “Aussie” has yet registered his name on the Vuelta charts, the 3rd grand tour of the year. In the Giro, Hindley is the second rider from his country to be on the final podium, following the same Cadel Evans (3rd in 2013).
