Bolzano – Today (May 27th, 2022), the gastroenterology department of the Bolzano State Hospital hosted national experts who gave lectures on the topics of Crohn’s disease and ulcerative colitis. The Bolzano Congress is part of an Italy-wide awareness campaign.
Crohn’s disease and ulcerative colitis are the most common forms of inflammatory bowel disease worldwide. Experts from all over Italy were invited to the congress in Bolzano.
The scientific exchange was organized by Michele Comberlato, Head of the Department of Gastroenterology, Physiopathology and Endoscopy of the Digestive Tract at the Bolzano Regional Hospital, together with gastroenterologists from Trento. Comberlato also served as the scientific director of the conference and as the regional delegate of the Italian Group for the Study of Inflammatory Bowel Disease (IG-IBD).
The congress in Bolzano is part of an Italy-wide awareness campaign on the topic of inflammatory bowel diseases, which includes several scientific meetings in each region until the end of the year.
Inflammatory bowel diseases with a chronic course often appear in childhood and require rapid, highly specialized treatment. Over the years, the concept of the multidisciplinary approach has prevailed between the various specialists involved in treating these patients. This new treatment paradigm of interdisciplinary cooperation is efficient and ensures an optimal individual course of treatment.
In South Tyrol, more than 2,000 people suffer from a disease of the digestive tract, mainly ulcerative colitis and Crohn’s disease. The special outpatient clinic of the department for gastroenterology of the regional hospital Bozen has been dedicated to this group of patients for more than 30 years. The department has also been the multidisciplinary reference center for the province of Bolzano for this type of intestinal disease for regarding 20 years. “Our center combines both clinical and endoscopic activities with the central method of “ultrasound of the intestinal loops”. We are also accredited by the internationally recognized national scientific society Italian Group for the Study of Inflammatory Bowel Disease (IG-IBD), which brings together around 60 national adult and pediatric gastroenterologists,” explains Primar Comberlato.
The speakers at the specialist conference included professors Paolo Gionchetti from Bologna, Maurizio Vecchi and Flavio Caprioli from Milan and Andrea Geccherle from Negrar.
The congress met with great interest and brought together numerous experts at regional level. On the one hand, there was a lively exchange of knowledge and on the other hand, the declared goal of raising awareness of chronic inflammatory bowel diseases was achieved.
