Valais: A fall of seracs caused victims in the Grand Combin

A major operation is underway following the collapse of part of a glacier. Fifteen mountaineers were on site at the time of the accident.

A fall of seracs took place at Grand Combin, in the town of Val de Bagnes, on Friday morning. Several climbers were affected. The alert was given at 6:20 am by other hikers. The incident took place at an altitude of 3400 meters, in the “Plateau du Déjeuner” sector during the ascent of the Grand Combin by the “Voie du Gardien”. Fifteen people were there at the time.

Huge resources were used in this rescue operation. Thus, no less than seven helicopters from Air Zermatt, Air Glaciers and Rega took part in this huge operation. Rescuers also evacuated other mountaineers.

The Public Prosecutor has opened an investigation to determine the circumstances of this event.

Late May is usually the ideal time for hikers wishing to ski the Grand Combin. The closest refuge to the massif, the Panossière hut announced the rest on son site that the hut would be guarded from last Saturday to this Saturday on the occasion of the “Grand Combin week”.
