A first patient is affected by monkey pox in Occitania. His condition does not inspire concern. What do we know at this stage?

The Monkeypox virus, or monkey pox in French, has arrived in Occitania. A first patient was infected, confirmed the Regional Health Agency (ARS), this Wednesday, May 25.

The patient is a man. Neither his age, nor his department of residence have been made public. These details will remain secret due to the confidentiality of personal medical data, specifies the ARS.

The patient is in good health and “his condition does not inspire any concern”, according to the Regional Health Agency. As soon as his infection was suspected, the man was medically taken care of and isolated to prevent contamination of the virus and the spread of monkeypox. Public Health France and ARS Occitanie have opened an epidemiological investigation.

To date, five cases of monkey pox have been identified in France by the health authorities: three in Ile-de-France, one in Auvergne Rhônes-Alpes and therefore one in Occitanie. The infections have no “direct link” with people returning from endemic areas such as central and west Africa. More than one hundred cases are known worldwide. A number that should increase, estimates the World Health Organization.

The French patients are all in good health. The cases of monkeypox reported in Europe are mostly mild. No casualties are known in Europe.
