The 98-year-old former US Secretary of State Henry Kissinger, who served from 1973 to 1977 during the presidency of Richard Nixon, called on the West to stop trying to inflict a crushing defeat on Russian troops in Ukraine. He warned that this would be disastrous for Europe’s long-term stability.
how informs British edition of The Telegraph, Kissinger said at the World Economic Forum in Davos that the conflict in Ukraine should not be dragged out. He “practically urged the West to force Ukraine to negotiate on terms that are far removed from its current military goals,” the publication notes.
The veteran American politician warned that negotiations must begin within the next two months or he predicts tensions that will not be easy to overcome.
“Ideally, the dividing line should be a return to the previous state of affairs,” Kissinger believes.
He also added that if the hostilities continue following that, they will no longer be fought for the freedom of Ukraine. “It will be a new war once morest Russia itself,” said the Nobel laureate, who at one time was the initiator and executor of the policy of détente between the US and the Soviet Union.
Kissinger also recalled that Russia has been a key part of Europe for centuries and served as the guarantor of the European balance of power at decisive moments, so European leaders should not lose sight of the prospects for long-term cooperation with Russia. The politician also believes that Russia should not be pushed towards a permanent alliance with China.
