How does a couple live when the husband travels through time? This is the basis of “The Time Traveler’s Wife” whose English actor Theo James, 37, is the hero. This new series has just started on OCS.

How did you slip into the shoes of Henry DeTamble, an ordinary man with a knack for time travel?

I’ve had a lot of cosmetic surgery! It was a real challenge to appear young, old and everything in between (laughs). We didn’t shoot anything in order which made the production even more complex, as we went from one decade to another in the space of a few hours on set. Fortunately, at one time in his life, I had a gray beard, which gave me a plot point (note: he winks). The idea of time travel is the basis of this love story between Henry and Claire, but our series is just as full of drama as it is humor.

Given the subject of your series, we can only ask you if you would like to travel in time…

Of course, but I wouldn’t like to transport myself to live in another era, just go back 50 years ago to get an idea of everyday life at the time. I tell myself that the 1960s or 1970s were surely less complicated, especially in terms of the population on our planet. I learned that following World War II there were only 2.5 billion people on Earth. Today, we are approaching 7 billion. I love London and its huge parks. I would like to go back, stroll through the gardens and walk the streets that were less populated. At the same time, maybe the smell was horrible, because cars weren’t equipped with catalytic converters 50 years ago (laughs).

The novel that serves as the basis of the series is a classic. Did you know him?

Yes, I had read it during my freshman year in college. My roommate loved this book to the point of transmitting this passion to me. He even told me that he wanted to buy the rights to adapt it to the screen. And decades later, I play Henry, the main character. Life is full of surprises.

Ten years following the beginning of the filming of the saga “Divergent”, are you happy with the evolution of your career?

I never set out to be a young first so being in my thirties suits me 100%. I even hope to have even more varied proposals following 40 years. You must not remain attached to your youthful image because it does not last.
