Verstappen tops the Formula 1 World Cup with victory in the Spanish Grand Prix

Red Bull’s Dutch driver Max Verstappen took first place in the Spanish Grand Prix and won the third in a row, to top the world championship standings, benefiting from the withdrawal of Charles Leclerc from Monaco while leading the race.

He was followed by Mexican teammate Sergio Perez at the Catalan Circuit in Montmelo, while British Mercedes driver George Russell completed the podium contract by finishing third.

The Dutchman won the circuit that entered the history of the first category in 2016, when he became at 18 years and 228 days the youngest driver to win a world championship round.

Destiny played its part in this race, with Leclerc comfortably positioned in pole position, until lap 28 when his Ferrari started to slow down due to a loss of power, to return to the pit and withdraw from the race.

After leading the world championship standings by 19 points, the Monaco son came out of Catalonia second, 6 points behind Verstein, before he races at home in Monaco next week.

Verstappen had to overcome his early wobbles when he was knocked off the track to the gravel by strong winds and a technical problem.

On the other hand, Mercedes showed a marked improvement following a falter start to the season with Russell in third place, while teammate and compatriot Lewis Hamilton made his way to fifth following an engine problem and a puncture in the opening round.
