If you spend a lot of time on your smartphone, scientists have a list of 10 solutions that can help you reduce the time you spend behind your smartphone screen.
Experts at McGill University in Canada say small, effective changes can help reduce smartphone addiction and mental health problems such as depression.
Experts reported that in trials, people who followed these strategies reduced the time they used their cell phones, felt less addicted to their phones and improved their sleep quality.
The study authors caution that problematic smartphone use has been increasing worldwide over the past decade, and say in their paper, published in the International Journal of Mental Health and Addiction, “The combination of different behavioral strategies might constitute a feasible and effective intervention to reduce smartphone use.”
The researchers conducted previous studies to compile a list of 10 simple strategies for cutting off smartphone use. Among the ten strategies are changing the phone’s screen to “grayscale” so that the screen appears black and white, and disabling facial recognition as a way to unlock the screen.
Previous studies have all shown an improvement in quality of life by reducing things like stress, depression and loneliness and improving sleep quality when smartphone use is reduced.
Here are 10 tips that help reduce the time of smartphone use, according to the British Daily Mail:
1. Reduce notifications: disable unnecessary notifications (sounds, banners, vibrations).
2. Set time limits: Enable screen time tracking and set limits for specific apps.
3. Keep your phone away while you sleep: Keep your phone on silent (with vibration turned off) and out of reach when you go to bed.
4. Set your screen to grayscale: A previous study found that making the screen appear black and white makes smartphones less satisfying to users.
5. Hide social media apps: Hide social media apps and email in a folder off the home screen (or even delete them).
6. Make your phone less accessible: Put your phone on silent (with vibration off) face down, out of sight and out of reach when not in use all day.
7. Make your phone more difficult to unlock: disable the face recognition or fingerprint scanner and use a password instead.
8. Lower the brightness: Change the display settings to reduce the brightness of your phone and change the color warmth to filter out the blue light.
9. Transfer phone tasks to PCs: If you can do this task on a PC, try to keep it on PC.
10. Leave your phone at home when you can: Leave your phone at home when you don’t need it (for example, when you’re buying groceries or going to the gym sports).
