Beware the “Tik Tok” trick to save avocados… it spreads salmonella

A trick circulating through the famous “Tik Tok” application, regarding how to keep avocados fresh, has sparked a lot of controversy, which called for a strict response from the US Food and Drug Administration.

In the details, a video clip appeared that achieved more than six million views, claiming an actual solution to save green fruits from turning brown, by placing them in a water bottle only and storing them in the refrigerator for a whole month, to keep them fresh all that time.

While an account followed by more than 65,000 people shared, via “Tik Tok”, the experiment, where avocados were cut two weeks following keeping them in a water bottle to reveal a bright green color, but the FDA warned once morest that experiment.

And a spokesperson for the Food and Drug Administration in the FDA revealed to “Newsweek”, that this practice can spread harmful bacteria, including salmonella.

He also said, “The US Food and Drug Administration does not recommend this practice, as salmonella and other bacteria are present on the surface of the avocado while it is stored in the water,” explaining that research has shown that these types of bacteria have the ability to infiltrate the avocado pulp within 15 days. During the cold storage period,” he continued, “Putting avocados in water provides an ideal opportunity for bacteria to spread and multiply.”
