Angel City FC scored their third victory in four games by narrowly beating the Kansas City Current, which has just one unit in the young NWSL season so far.
The Angelinas benefited from a defensive error on the visit and celebrated the three points at the Banc of California Stadium on Saturday. Angel City added its second consecutive win.
After a deep pass from Savannah McCaskill, Christen Press went with everything into the rival area and the visitors reacted well to avoid her shot, however, the forward followed the ball until they were left without the court and sent the center that produced the only goal of the encounter. Press’s serve ended up bouncing off Taylor Leach for her to score into her own goal with an own goal in the 70th minute.
With the win, Angel City FC adds nine points along with San Diego FC’s Wave, but remains second in the Western Conference on goal difference.
“We were very hungry following the last game we played at home to go out and correct that,” said coach Freya Coombe following the win. “They were really tuned in for this game. We went through the opening minutes where I thought Kansas did a great job of putting pressure on us. I think we’ve matured there in terms of being able to withstand that pressure and that storm.”
Home goalkeeper DiDi Haracic didn’t get much action once morest her, but when she was challenged with a couple of dangerous shots, she reacted in a big way.
“I’m just doing my job and our defense did theirs,” Haracic said. “I want closures… as Freya said [Coombe]we’re building these relationships, we’re starting to trust each other, we’re putting ourselves in awkward positions in training and learning from it.”
Angel City FC will stay home to host Gotham FC from NJ/NY on May 29 (5 pm, Paramount+).
