Game 3 of the series between the Colorado Avalanche and the St. Louis Blues got off to a tough start.
There were less than two minutes elapsed following the initial face-off when the defender Samuel Girard received a severe check from the Blues striker Ivan Barbashev.
The 24-year-old defender retrieved the puck along the ramp behind his net to make a breakout, but it was hit as he completed his pass.
Girard’s header hit the ramp hard and the defender lay flat on the ice.
Girard was first able to get back on his skates and retreated to the locker room accompanied by the trainer.
The organization later said he had been taken to hospital. Eventually, the Avalanche clarified that he suffered a broken sternum, and that his playoffs are over.
In six games in this playoff, Girard has recorded one goal and two assists.
