Early on Saturday morning at 1.45 a.m., the Aargau cantonal police received the report that a passenger car on Staffeleggstrasse in Küttigen AG in the general direction of travel to Aarau had collided with the tunnel portal of the Horental tunnel. Even as the report was received, the heavily damaged vehicle began to burn.
The third parties present tried to extinguish the fire, but were unsuccessful. As a result of the report, several patrols from the Aarau city police and the Aargau canton police, an ambulance and the Küttigen and Aarau fire brigades were immediately deployed on site.
The police patrols who arrived following a very short time also tried to extinguish the still burning vehicle, but this was no longer possible due to the full fire in the vehicle. The fire brigade was able to bring the fire under control and extinguish it a short time later. The cause of the accident and the identity of the deceased are currently still unclear and are the subject of ongoing investigations. (chs)
