José Roberto Uribe Delgado, a Medicine student in his last semester at the University of Antioquia, was the winner of the Ascofame 2022 Best Internal Medicine Award.
The Colombian Association of Faculties of Medicine (Ascofame) evaluated the clinical knowledge and skills of 864 candidates belonging to 51 medical schools in the country, of which the 25-year-old took this recognition.
At the event, the applicants were subjected to several filters that assessed them comprehensively, taking into account their profile and performance during the race. In this regard, Uribe stated that “this represents the effort of many years, the quality of education provided by the Faculty of Medicine of the University of Antioquia, the efforts of my family and loved ones. It is one more achievement that reflects my passion for medicine and medical work”.
Passion that, according to this young man, began at a very young age due to the curiosity that aroused in him to understand the reason for things, in addition to the admiration he has always felt for health professionals.
”I liked understanding why certain phenomena occur and how science can help. I always saw doctors as exemplary people, with a very important role in society and with the ability to generate great impacts on their patients through knowledge. I wanted to be able to do the same.”Uribe explained.
The family’s first doctor became the pride of the family, despite the fact that he had to appear three times at the University of Antioquia to be able to pass, today he enjoys national recognition that has led him to challenge himself every day.
“The most difficult thing is facing the unknown, medicine is unpredictable and even though we know a lot regarding a condition, each patient has a unique story and body. At the same time, this is what makes her so attractive,” she added.
One of his goals is to specialize and although he likes plastic surgery, in recent months he has been attracted to anesthesiology. “I will have to decide soon which of the two paths to follow,” he said.
Another of the winners was Mateo Estrada Ospina, who also belongs to this university and was named the Best Intern in Antioquia. The dean of the Faculty of Medicine, Carlos Alberto Palacio Acosta, was highly pleased with the high performance of the students.
“It is the result of the commitment, conviction and judicious work of each one of our professors, who understand the social responsibility that it represents training the future doctors of the country, who during their time at this Faculty acquire medical and clinical knowledge and skills”, the dean stated.
During this process, they studied their resumes, professional skills and also their knowledge, there 60 finalists were chosen, 10 from each of the regions of the medical schools that groups the Ascofame.
Of the 10 department semi-finalists for the Ascofame Best Intern Award, seven were students from this Faculty of the University of Antioquia, among whom were: Daniel Bejarano, Mateo Estrada Ospina, Pablo Hernández, Karen Moreno, Daniel Pérez, Natalia Torres and Jose Roberto Uribe Delgado.
All the winners will be invited to the face-to-face award ceremony that will take place in the city of Cali within the framework of the regional forum on medical education of Ascofame next June 3.
