Lab – Sony A95K QD-Oled TV: unprecedented Rec.2020 color space coverage!

Until now, Oled televisions might display between 70 and 74% of the colors of the Rec.2020 color space. A few LCD TVs manage to do better and the record so far was held by the TCL 65C815 with 76% coverage. The Sony Bravia XR-55A95K and its QD-Oled panel pulverize this figure since they cover 84% of the colors of the Rec.2020 space. A new record which finally marks a step forward in this field and suggests the best for the future.

If the coverage of the DCI-P3 remains generally close between Oled and QD-Oled technologies, the latter clearly takes the advantage when it comes to the Rec.2020 colorimetric space. We can clearly see this on the reproduction of the latter: the Sony television displays a much more saturated green and red, which allows it to display a magenta and a cyan which are also present.

This gain will not be visible on all content. Indeed, if the Ultra HD standard makes good use of the Rec.2020 color space, most films are calibrated to the DCI-P3 color space. There are only a few movies that truly exploit Rec.2020. We can mention the animated film Vice versa by Pixar, le Marvel Aquaman, The Greatest Showman or the remastered version of Fifth element. There is no doubt that the arrival of QD-Oled TVs finally covering a large part of the Rec.2020 space will push directors to fully exploit this expanded color space.
