No Museum Night this year in Lebanon to mark International Museum Day. However, the International Council of Museums (ICOM) announces for today, Wednesday May 18, that museum institutions will be open free of charge to amateurs.
Lebanese Minister of Culture Mohammad Mortada announced a few days ago that access to archaeological sites and museums in Lebanon would be free from May 18 to 27.
“Lebanese visitors will be exempt from entrance fees to archaeological sites, the National Museum, museums and Beiteddine Palace from May 18 to 27 inclusive,” the minister said. This decision comes on the occasion of Museum Day, but also to mark National Heritage Day and the 80th anniversary of the National Museum of Beirut. An opportunity which, according to the ministry, “aims to raise awareness of the role that museums play in social development and familiarization with cultural heritage”.
