In Chile they approve a project that changes the word woman for “menstruating person”

The parliamentarians were discussing a law for access to personal hygiene products.

The Chilean Chamber of Deputies approved a new project in which the word “woman” is replaced by the term “menstruating person”, an initiative that now goes to the Senate.

A statement from the Chamber of Deputies of Chile indicates that this room approved the project that guarantees the rights of menstruating people and that said proposal indicates that the State “recognizes that people with the capacity to menstruate are holders of the right to free menstrual management and worthy. For this reason, public policies that generate its proper exercise must be supported, favored and promoted.”

He explains that during the debate the parliamentarians of the Republican Party Cristóbal Urruticoechea, Gloria Naveillan, Chiara Barchiesi, Cristián Araya and Luis Sánchez expressed their opposition to the text.

It was criticized that the woman is not recognized and named in the articles of the project.

They pointed out that, in order to advance in the comprehensive protection of women, its explicit recognition in this law is essential. Otherwise, they estimated, “queer newspeak” is supported, the statement said. They added that this debate is an ideological issue.

While the testimonies in favor of the proposal were given by the deputies Mercedes Bulnes, Lorena Pizarro, Marisela Santibáñez, Erika Olivera, Daniela Serrano and Carolina Tello.

“They argued that the concept of “menstruating person” includes any human being who is in a menstruating situation. From this point of view, they considered that the word “person” is the appropriate one in this project”, explains the Chamber of Deputies in the statement.
