Road safety is a priority for the Brussels Capital Ixelles police zone. “Despite our best efforts, in recent weeks we have experienced a sudden increase in cases of rodeo driving, ie excessive speed and inappropriate driving, in the Heysel Plateau area. Although drastic measures in terms of infrastructure have already been taken in the past (partial closure of the Place Louis Steens roundregarding with concrete blocks), it turns out that, with good weather, the speeders drive back to the area and press the accelerator hard,” the police zone said in a statement.
In the past, the police, in collaboration with the City of Brussels, set up a task force which specifically focused on this phenomenon, which led, last weekend, to the administrative towing of two vehicles. This Saturday, May 14, in the evening, a patrol intercepted a driver who was driving at an inappropriate speed on Boulevard du Centenaire. In doing so, the driver, accompanied by a seven-year-old child who was in the back seat, endangered pedestrians and other road users. The individual’s driver’s license was immediately withdrawn for 15 days and the car was seized administratively.
Shortly following, a patrol observed another vehicle traveling at least 80 km/h in zone 30 near Jean Sobieski Avenue. This second driver, too, was showing dangerous driving and was intercepted. His driving license was also withdrawn for 15 days and his car seized administratively.
107km/h
Over the past few weeks and months, speed checks have been carried out regularly in the neighborhood. Earlier this month, for example, a driver was fined for driving at 101 km/h on Houba De Strooper Avenue, where the maximum authorized speed is 50 km/h. The chaussée Romaine, avenue Madrid and avenue Impératrice Charlotte, as well as rue Emile Delva also experienced regular speed checks. In this last street, a driver was fined for driving at 107 km/h, although the maximum authorized speed is 30 km/h.
The police zone would like to point out that, in the months to come, it will continue to pay particular attention to offenses relating to speeding and unsuitable driving, with the aim of guaranteeing the safety of all residents and users of the public road on the territory of the zone.
