A 25-year-old man lost his life on Sunday followingnoon near the Evergem lock, on the Ghent peripheral canal. If the circumstances of the accident are not yet clear, the investigation is still in progress and no witness attended the scene, it would seem that the man found himself trapped between a boat and the wharf while he was trying to save his dog.
“A family of boatmen was raising anchor to pass the Evergem lock when their dog wanted to jump from the ship to the quay. But the domestic animal accidentally fell into the water, and a young member of the family would have jumped into the canal to rescue him. The victim finally found himself trapped between the moving boat and the quay”, communicated the public prosecutor’s office of Ghent.
