NATO threatens Russia and reassures Turkey… and welcomes the accession of Finland and Sweden

In a video conference with the German foreign minister, NATO Secretary General Jens Stoltenberg said the alliance’s doors are open. to join Finland and SwedenHe emphasized that the decision would be historic.

Stoltenberg stressed that Russia had not achieved its strategic goals in Ukraine, and pledged that NATO would continue to support Ukraine in confronting Russia, noting that Ukraine might win the war.

In turn, the German Foreign Minister said that the Russian war on Ukraine proved the importance of NATO, stressing the need to preserve collective European security.

For her part, German Foreign Minister Annalina Barbock said that the current security situation calls for work to strengthen NATO politically and militarily, considering that Sweden and Finland are welcome to join the alliance.

In this context, Finnish President Sauli Niinisto said, during a press conference with Prime Minister Sanna Marin, that the authorities had agreed to apply to join NATO, following consulting with Parliament.

Niinisto added that the decision is historic and marks the beginning of a new era.

Always on a potential membership application file, the Finnish president told CNN that Russian President Vladimir Putin had told him joining NATO would be a mistake but he did not repeat the threat.

He pointed out that the recent talks with Putin on NATO were calm, and earlier, the Finnish president confirmed the existence of an agreement between the government and Parliament to formally submit the request to NATO, describing it as a “historic day.”
