USA: Lacking “viability”, American Trappist monks cease their brewing activity

The brewery at St. Joseph’s Abbey in Spencer, Massachusetts, opened in 2013 and benefits from the help of the monks of the Notre-Dame de Scourmont abbeywhere the famous Trappist beer of Chimay is brewed.

Three criteria are required for a Trappist beer to display the mention “authentic” (“Authentic trappist product“): part of the proceeds must be paid to social works, the beer must imperatively be brewed within a Trappist abbey, and under the supervision of monks of this order.
