Hyundai Motor Company is expected to announce a plan to build a $7 billion electric car plant in Georgia, USA, in time for US President Joe Biden’s visit to Korea.

The Associated Press reported on the 12th (local time) and predicted that 8,500 jobs will be created through Hyundai Motor’s investment. The Atlanta Journal Constitution (AJC) also reported that Hyundai Motor Company and Georgia State will simultaneously announce plans to establish Hyundai Motor’s electric vehicle plant next week.

The new plant site is said to be likely in Bryan County near Savannah in eastern Georgia. The 2284-acre site was purchased by the Savannah Economic Development Authority of Georgia for $61 million (regarding 76.2 billion won) in May last year. Hyundai Motor is expected to produce cars and batteries under the Hyundai and Kia brands at the new plant.

Earlier, Archyde.com also reported that Hyundai Motor is in talks with Georgian authorities to build a new electric vehicle production plant. A source at the time said, “Once the new plant is completed in Georgia, Hyundai and Kia will launch the Ioniq 7 and EV9, both electric vehicles and sport utility vehicles (SUVs), targeting the US market.”

Hyundai built Hyundai Motor’s Alabama plant and Kia’s Georgia plant in 2006 and 2009, respectively. Currently, the Kia Motors plant is producing internal combustion engine vehicles.
