Spanish-Venezuelan MEP Leopoldo López Gil reported this Tuesday that he sent a letter to Josep Borrell, High Representative of the European Union for Foreign Affairs and Security Policy. In the letter he asked for “firmness and unity” once morest the Latin American countries that support Vladimir Putin, including Venezuela.
The letter is also signed by the Vice President of the European Parliament, Dita Charanzová. Specifically, they denounce that the governments of countries such as Cuba, Venezuela and Nicaragua have expressed their support for Russia in the face of the invasion of Ukraine.
Letter from López Gil to Borrell
“In Latin America, Putin has close collaborators, such as the various tyrants in Cuba, Nicaragua or Venezuela, who have no qualms regarding justifying aggression once morest Ukraine. However, the oppressed peoples of these countries are once morest this situation,” the letter states.
The MEPs sent the letter, following a visit by de Borrell to Latin America. They asked him to “work to condemn these regimes that systematically violate human rights and take firm, coherent and unified positions on the part of the European Union before these countries.”
López Gil said: “Sanctions unilaterally imposed on people who have violated human rights are not enough. It is time to isolate complacent dictatorships from atrocities and crimes once morest humanity.
He clarified that the vast majority of Central American and Caribbean countries openly condemn Russian aggression and express their clear support for the sovereignty and territorial integrity of Ukraine.
López Gil stated that he agreed with Borrell on “the decisive moment that the world is experiencing and on the need to be more united than ever defending democracy in this difficult geopolitical context.”
Similarly, López Gil supported Borrell’s position by describing Nicaragua as a “dictatorship and oppressive state that has imprisoned political opponents.
And he added that he hopes that a review will be made of the cases of Maduro and Miguel Diaz Canel, “These have systematically acted in the same way as Ortega,” he said.
