Angels lefty Reid Detmers throws no-hitter vs. Rays

Reid Detmers needed just 11 starts to make history with the Los Angeles Angels.

Detmers threw a no-hitter on Tuesday night while leading the Angels to a 12-0 blowout win over the Tampa Bay Rays in Anaheim. It’s the first solo no-hitter of the MLB season and the second in total, following a combined no-hitter from the New York Mets.

Detmers, who the Angels took with the No. 10 pick out of Louisville in the 2020 draft, had never thrown more than six innings in a game before Tuesday night. The 22-year-old recorded the no-hitter in 108 pitches with two strikeouts and a walk.

Detmers now holds the 10th individual no-hitter in franchise history, and the first since the team’s combined no-hitter on July 12, 2019, the Angels’ first since the death of pitcher Tyler Skaggs.

The Angels had no issue rolling over the Rays, which was perhaps illustrated best by Anthony Rendon’s home run in the eighth inning. He stepped up to the plate left handed for the first time in his career, and came back with a two-run homer.

The Angels have won three straight, including Monday night’s 11-3 win over the Rays.
