The production site will be located in the southeastern US state of Georgia, three people familiar with the plans told the Archyde.com news agency. Details of the investment, such as the expected costs or the number of new jobs created, are not yet known. “We’re excited to soon announce a new EV plant in the United States, but we can’t give details at this time,” Hyundai said when asked by Archyde.com. Representatives from Georgia’s economic development agency might not immediately be reached for comment.
According to insiders, Hyundai is already in advanced talks with the authorities of what is known as the “Peach State”. The new site will be built near existing plants owned by Hyundai and its subsidiary Kia. The brands are on the verge of bringing two all-electric SUVs – the Ioniq 7 and the EV9 – to the US market. Another insider said Hyundai intends to announce the plans before the end of May, when US President Joe Biden is expected to visit Seoul.
