BOSTON — The Boston Red Sox placed center fielder Kiké Hernández and left-handed starter Rich Hill on the COVID-19 list ahead of Friday’s game opener of the series once morest the Chicago White Sox at Fenway Park.
“They’re going through tests,” said Alex Cora, Boston’s Puerto Rican manager. “We will have the results probably later. As for the symptoms, they have them, but hopefully there is nothing wrong.”
Hill (0-1 with a 2.86 ERA), 42, pitched a five-inning shutout in an 8-0 loss to the Angels on Thursday. It was his third shutout start in a row, a cumulative stretch of 13 innings.
Boston thus suffered its eleventh loss in 15 games.
To fill in for the absentees on the roster, the team called up outfielder Jarren Duran from Triple-A Worcester and selected right-hander John Schreiber.
Duran, 25, a top prospect, was included in the lineup as a center fielder and leadoff hitter to face Chicago. He was hitting .397 in Triple-A when he was promoted.
He struggled last season in 33 games with the Red Sox, hitting just .215 with 40 strikeouts in 107 at-bats.
