A 51-year-old man known to the police community was arrested following stabbing his spouse in Quebec, on the night of Thursday to Friday, while an 8-year-old girl was in the accommodation.
The police were called to intervene around 11 p.m., in an apartment building on rue Sainte-Cécile, near Fargy Park in the Beauport sector. It was the hubbub caused by the altercation that prompted a neighbor to contact the authorities.
My patio door was ajar and I heard my downstairs neighbor screaming for help. She was completely panicked and fled, barefoot, into the street,” says Christian Langlois, who immediately contacted 9-1-1.
Arriving at the scene within minutes, law enforcement officers discovered the 46-year-old woman covered in blood who suffered multiple stab wounds.
She was quickly transported to the hospital center, but her injuries would not put her life in danger, assures Sandra Dion, spokesperson for the Quebec City Police Service (SPVQ).
The victim’s 8-year-old daughter was also in the home when the altercation occurred, but was not injured. She was taken care of and entrusted to relatives, according to witnesses.
Known to police
A perimeter was set up Thursday evening to allow investigators to shed light on the incident, but the latter was lifted quickly on Friday morning.
At the passage of Journalhowever, traces of blood were still visible on the door of the couple’s accommodation, a sign of the violence of the attack.
The suspect in this case is the victim’s spouse, a 51-year-old man. He was arrested at the scene and taken to the police station where he was detained overnight.
He is due to appear on Friday for attempted murder and breach of probation. According to our information, he is an individual known to the police community with a well-filled criminal roadmap.
He has previous convictions for assault, threats, break and enter, vehicle theft, mischief and fraud.
Neighbors in shock
Far from suspecting that the couple was living in a situation of domestic violence, neighbors have difficulty explaining how this event might have occurred.
According to the owner of the building, the suspect moved in with the woman regarding two months ago, when she had lived in the apartment for almost a year.
“When I saw the lights and the security perimeter in the middle of the night, I mightn’t believe it. It’s right next to us!”, underlines a neighbor visibly shaken by the events.
“It’s not a problem area here, it’s usually quiet. We will never know, but perhaps a life was saved thanks to the 9-1-1 call,” said Mr. Langlois.
