Spain: An explosion in a building in Madrid leaves 17 injured and two missing

The building in a chic district of the Spanish capital had the windows blown by an explosion on Friday, shortly following noon. The investigation is continuing and the emergency services are looking for two workers.

A strong explosion took place this Friday, around 1:30 p.m., in a building in the center of Madrid. This four-storey building, located at the intersection between Ayala Street and General-Pardiñas Street, in the very chic Salamanca district, saw its windows blown out by the explosion.

Many emergency vehicles were deployed in the area and searches were underway to find two missing people. “Madrid firefighters are looking for two workers missing following the explosion,” the emergency services tweeted. According to the latest report, 17 wounded were taken care of. Four of them were transferred to hospitals, one of them in serious condition.

“We know that work was taking place in the building,” Madrid Mayor José Luis Martínez-Almeida told reporters, before specifying that the reasons for the explosion remained unknown.
