The pandemic and a TV rights crisis cost the Parisian club dearly during the 2020-2021 season.
Paris SG suffered a loss of 224.28 million euros (232.6 million francs) in the 2020/21 season, marked by a TV rights crisis in Ligue 1 and behind closed doors, according to the annual report of the financial policeman of French football (DNCG).
The club’s deficit increased by 80% compared to that of the previous financial year (128.7 million francs), interrupted in March 2020 due to the Covid-19 pandemic.
The accounts of 17 of the 20 elite teams ended in the red, according to data released Wednesday by the Professional Football League (LFP). They were only 10 a year earlier.
The total losses of L1 clubs amount to 669.8 million francs with, behind PSG, Lyon (111 million), Marseille (78.8 million) and Bordeaux (69.5 million) which are the most deficit.
Tickets: free fall
In one year, Parisians have seen their ticketing revenue drop from 39.4 million francs to 996,400 francs due to health restrictions that imposed the Parc des Princes completely behind closed doors for a large part of the season. This drop of almost 98% is close to that observed at the level of L1 (95%). At the same time, staff compensation increased by 21% to CHF 521.5 million.
The DNCG clarified that the payroll of PSG weighed as much last season as that of the 14 clubs with the lowest levels.
PSG, owned by the Qatari fund QSI, received during this same very loss-making season 209.2 million francs in TV rights, including 151.4 million linked to its course in the Champions League, with a final in August 2020 and a half -final in 2021.
