To denounce the Bay du Nord oil megaproject, environmental groups promise to reserve a “sarcastic welcome” to the federal Minister of the Environment, Tuesday, on the occasion of the Montreal Climate Summit.
The rally, which will take on clownish looks, is scheduled for 8:30 a.m. in front of the Bonsecours market and will serve to denounce the “dangerous” policies of the three levels of government in environmental matters.
Activists say the Bay du Nord project off Newfoundland is ‘incompatible’ with meeting Ottawa’s greenhouse gas (GHG) emissions reduction targets of 40-45% by 2030.
The project to build a third link between Quebec and Lévis is also not in the good graces of environmentalists, who deplore the scarcity of Summit tickets, making the event inaccessible for many communities.
“The people hardest hit by climate change in Montreal are, among others, those who are homeless, who live in disadvantaged neighborhoods undermined by heat islands or who perform manual trades outdoors,” said Léonard. Leclerc, from the Student Coalition for an Environmental and Social Shift (CEVES).
“It is impossible to avoid climate disaster if the federal government authorizes even a single project like Bay du Nord, which would begin its oil extraction at the earliest in 2028”, explained Anna Morineau, member of the Ecotheque.
