Even if Call of Duty is one of the most famous licenses of our favorite media, some episodes have not had the expected success; this is particularly the case with Vanguard, the latest chapter. But why this title did not work? Activision responds.
Profits below expectations, Vanguard is the cause
Not long ago, Activision, the company behind the Call of Duty saga, announced its financial report for the first quarter of the year 2022. And what we can see is that the firm shows a significant loss in turnover from one year to the next, from 2.28 billion dollars to 1.77 billion dollars. The company also mentions having recorded mixed profits, with in particular a delay of 300 million dollars on forecasts. For Activision, the mixed reception of Call of Duty : Vanguarda game that takes place in the Second World War, would be the cause.
Indeed, Call of Duty: Vanguard had a bad reception among players. According to the American company, the era chosen by their development teams, the Second World War, was a mistake.
While Call of Duty remains one of the most popular entertainment franchises of all time, our 2021 release fell short of our expectations. (…) The game’s World War II setting didn’t resonate with part of our community and we didn’t bring as much innovation to the game as we would have liked. Activision in its latest financial statement
Note, however, that Activision also seems to forget the feedback from the press, which was not very good when the game was released. For our part, we have notably opted for a 14 out of 20 and we pointed out many flaws, starting with a single-player campaign that lacked intensity and a Zombies mode with much too shy content.

There is also a loss in the number of players from one year to the next for the American brand. Today, Activision-Blizzard only has “more” 372 million players compared to 435 million at the same time in 2021, which represents a drop of almost 14% year-on-year.
This time, Vanguard is not the only culprit, since Activision is also noticing a drop in player engagement for Battle Royale. Warzone.
However, to make up for this delay, Activision-Blizzard seems to have worked hard: recently, the company being acquired by Microsoft, formalized work on a Call of Duty : Warzone 2 and on the reboot of Modern Warfare 2 which is present as “the most ambitious project in Call of Duty history”, just that.
For its part, Blizzard revealed Warcraft Arclight Rumblea Warcraft game that borrows heavily from Clash Royaleand announced the release date of Diablo Immortal. As a reminder, the title is expected for June 2 on PC, iOS and Android.
