Unemployment at its lowest since the creation of the single currency area

The unemployment rate for February, initially estimated at 6.8%, has been revised upwards to 6.9%, said Eurostat.

The unemployment rate for the whole of the European Union was estimated at 6.2% in March, down from 6.3% in February (also revised upwards and initially estimated at 6.2 %) and at the rate of 7.5% recorded in March 2021.

In March 2022, 13.374 million men and women were unemployed in the EU, including 11.274 million in the euro area. Over one month, the number of unemployed fell by 85,000 in the EU and by 76,000 in the euro zone. Year on year, compared to March 2021, unemployment fell by 2.359 million in the EU and by 1.931 million in the euro area.

Regarding youth unemployment, 2.579 million young people (under 25) were unemployed in the EU in March 2022, including 2.098 million in the euro area. In March 2022, the youth unemployment rate stood at 13.9% in both the EU and the euro area, down from the 14% rate recorded in both areas the previous month. Compared to March 2021, youth unemployment fell by 623,000 in the EU and by 507,000 in the euro area.
